A Valentine’s Day Date with the Trans Justice Funding Project: Apply for a Grant by February 15th

The Trans Justice Funding Project (TJFP) application deadline is coming up on February 15th. Got an organization and/or project idea that would benefit trans people of color in mind but are stumped for funding ideas? Check out the following overview of their funding process and criteria.

Why a Trans Justice Funding Project?

Because very little money goes to LGBT organizations and even less goes to trans justice work. Even less than that goes to groups run by and for trans people. Even less goes to grassroots, local work. Even less goes to groups that center the leadership of trans people organizing around their experiences with racism, economic injustice, transmisogyny, ableism, immigration, incarceration, and other intersecting oppressions. And very little if any of this money is non-restricted funding that activists can use in whatever way they deem best. By creating the Trans Justice Funding Project, we hope to help call attention to all this while moving some money right now. We also hope to help organizations build longer-term relationships with donors (and maybe even some foundations) who want to support this work but might not know about some of the more under-the-radar organizing that is happening.

Why a community-led giving process?

When wealthy donors and foundations control the giving process, it gives them an inordinate amount of power over what kind of work gets done and what organizations have to do to keep themselves afloat. This project is about investing in communities making decisions by and for ourselves. We believe in the power of community-led decision-making.

What is your funding criteria?

What we fund:

• Groups, projects and organizations across the U.S. from rural areas to big cities
• Groups that have 501c3 status or fiscal sponsorship
• Groups that don’t have 501c3 status or fiscal sponsorship
• Established organizations
• Groups that are just getting started

What we don’t fund:

• Individuals
• Groups outside the U.S.

We are committed to supporting groups that:

• Are run by and for trans communities.
• Support and encourage trans leadership.
• Are guided by a commitment to trans justice and anti-oppression work.
• Center the leadership of trans people organizing around their experiences with racism, economic injustice, transmisogyny, ableism, immigration, incarceration, and other intersecting oppressions.
• Collaborate with other local groups and think of themselves as part of a bigger picture of trans-led work that seeks dignity and justice for all people.
• Are meeting the needs of different local communities and using organizing and/or providing services to help bring people together.

The deadline to apply for a grant from the Trans Justice Funding Project is February 15th, the day after Valentine’s Day. Easy enough to remember.
